Emergency Dental
At Nottingham Dental, we strive to address your emergency dental needs. While no one needs to be burdened with dental problems, they are a daily fact of life.
Please take a note of the following list for appropriate management during each dental emergency. Ignoring a dental problem can increase the risk of permanent damage as well as the need for more extensive and expensive treatment later on. Please be sure to contact our office as soon as possible to allow timely management of the emergency.

Toothaches
When experiencing a toothache, thoroughly rinse your mouth with warm water and use of dental floss to remove any food impaction between your teeth. When appropriate, take over the counter pain medication to reduce pain.
Chipped or Broken Teeth
When you experience a chipped or broken teeth make sure tosave any broken pieces. Rinse out your mouth and place the broken pieces in warm water. If bleeding is present, apply a piece of gauze with adequate pressure until the bleeding stops. Then apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and relieve pain. Call our office as soon as possible.
Knocked-out Tooth
Retrieve the tooth by holding it by the crown (the part that is usually exposed in the mouth), and rinse off the tooth root with water if it’s dirty. Do not scrape or remove any attached soft tissue fragments from the root(s). If possible, attempt to replant the tooth back into its socket. If unable to do so, store the tooth in the patient’s mouth or in a small container of milk. See our dentist or another provider within one hour of the incident.
Extruded (Partial Dislodged) Tooth
Attempt to gently reposition tooth back in the correct position and call our office right away. Take pain medication to reduce symptoms.
Lost Filling
As a temporary measure, a sugarless gum can be put into the cavity where the filling is missing.
Lost Crown
When appropriate and not painful, use over-the-counter dental cement to re-cement the crown.If dislodgement is possible, avoid re-cementing crown to avoid choking hazards.
Abscess
Abscesses are infections that occur around the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. Abscesses are a serious condition that can damage tissue and surrounding teeth. If untreated infection could possibly spread to other parts of the body.
If you discover a painful pimple-like swelling on your gum, try to draw the pus toward the surface byrinsing your mouth with a mild salt water solution (1/2 teaspoon of table salt in 8 ounces of water) several times a day.
